Street Cats of Vis : Helping People Help Cats

Street cats from anywhere on the island of Vis can be spayed and neutered for free. We rely on donations for everything else: exams, medications, fostering and adoption expenses, food, and equipment to help us save lives.

Unsterilized street cats mate, unwanted kittens are born, then dumped or killed.

If they’re dumped, they often die young after much suffering. Look at the poor kitten near the end of this video: we found him last fall at Wellington, our local open-air dump.

Just today we were trapping out there and saw nine wild cats out in the trash. We got lucky and caught one, a female.

Sterilizing her will prevent her from having any more kittens, even though, sadly, we’ll have to return her to the dump once she’s recovered from surgery.

That’s her at the end of this video. She could have been someone’s house cat, but no… she got dumped.

Sterilizing can prevent so much suffering, and it’s free for street cats from anywhere on the island. If you need help catching cats for sterilizing, contact us.

Abandoned cats often have some positive experience with humans, and will come near, even if they’re wary. Cats who were born wild, or who have become wild, try their best to never be seen.

We’ve been caring for cats who’ve been abandoned at Wellington, our local open-air dump, since 2020. Many cats have come and gone, and we’ve also gotten many out of the dump and into loving homes.

It never ceases to amaze us that in spite of sterilization being free on Vis, cats and kittens continue to be dumped at the dump, and elsewhere.

Our regulars at the Wellington oasis are lucky: they’re fed on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, same as the colony in the cat forest across the street from Tommy supermarket.

But what about the wild ones, living and dying out in the trash? We know they’re out there, because we look for them from time to time, and go trapping. We rarely see the wild ones again once they’re released.

Dumping unsterilized cats means they’ll keep reproducing for as long as they live. This perpetuates the cycle of suffering: why do this when sterilizing is free on Vis?

Luna was found in 2020 in Athens, scavenging for f

Luna was found in 2020 in Athens, scavenging for food in garbage containers. She was about five months old and already infected with FeLV, which went undetected because the tests are unreliable in very young kittens.

A German couple adopted her, and with good care in Germany, she lived to be over five years old, despite the FeLV.

She died from an aggressive form of lymphoma caused by FeLV. She had been scheduled for surgery on her last good day: during the surgery, it was discovered that her intestines were completely filled with tumors and almost entirely blocked. She was never woken from anesthesia, because treatment was no longer possible.
�She was a much loved and cuddly companion, and the German couple have created a fund in her memory so that other street cats can be vaccinated early and not have to suffer the same fate as their beloved Luna.

This couple supports Street Cats of Vis, and Luna’s Shield will provide free vaccines for street cats on Vis for as long as funds are available. If you know of a street cat that needs to be vaccinated, contact us.

Our very small cathouse is a space for sick and injured cats to be cared for and to recover. As cats recover and become ready for adoption, we have nowhere else to hold them, so the cathouse is currently very crowded. To keep everyone happy, we make sure they get plenty of enrichment. Here’s what playtime looks like.

Caring for community cats is a community effort: i

Caring for community cats is a community effort: it’s never just one person. There’s the visible and heroic work of cat catching, vet visits and caring for the sick and injured, the less-visible steady maintenance work of colony caretaking, as well as the invisible work of creating our fundraising items, maintaining our online presence, organizing transport, ordering food, fundraising, finding homes for our adoptable cats, and all sorts of other logistics.

We’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the efforts of everyone who donates their time and resources to the noble cause of helping street cats: our members, the local businesses who help raise funds via events and calendar sales, people who live on our land for a month or more at a time as cat caretakers, people who give us rides to help distribute cat food or do other cat-related tasks, people near and far who help spread our message, who help us find foster and forever homes, who foster and adopt, who help organize transport, who share our posts on social media, and all the people who donate to help keep the bills paid and the cat food bowls full.

Aside from people who provide professional services (vets, accountant, printers… for whom we’re also grateful), the work is entirely volunteer-driven. We all choose to donate our time, energy, resources, and often our personal space, because we truly want to improve the lives of street cats, and to prevent suffering.

Many people stand quietly behind the scenes, helping us regularly with donations, adoptions, and logistics. We want you to know how grateful we are: none of this would be possible without your support.

Street Cats of Vis is truly a combination of ALL of us contributing in whatever ways we’re able in order to improve the lives of street cats. It’s never just one person.

The icon you see throughout this video is Helper Cat. Helper Cat shows up wherever we need help, or where people are helping us.

This is Fireball’s mother, Mama Cat, nursing him and his siblings in late July, 2019. She had her kittens in town, but neighbors were threatening to dump them, so the little family was brought to our land.

Mama Cat barely tolerated motherhood, and made her way back to town before her kittens were even four weeks old. This was impressive, since the land is about a 40-minute walk from town.

Since the kittens still needed her, we brought her back to the land. She stayed for about another week, then made her way back to town again. Wow!

We let her rest for a couple days, because the kittens were weaned by then, and we were up there caring for them. We brought her back up, thinking she might like life on the land, but when she made her way back to town a third time, we let her stay.

She and the kittens were all sterilized. Two kittens were adopted, and one has since died, as has Mama Cat. Two are still living on the land, and Fireball is in foster care, awaiting adoption.

Mama Cat had six kittens in her last litter: three girls, and three boys. Had she and the kittens not been sterilized, they could have gone on to have many more.

Female kittens can get pregnant as early as four months old, and can have two to three litters per year, of three to six kittens each. Perpetual pregnancy is exhausting, weakening the mother, and unwanted kittens often struggle to survive.

Sterilization will never make kittens obsolete, as some people fear. But it will definitely prevent unnecessary suffering for street cats. And on Vis, street cats can be sterilized for free!

For many years, there was no vet on Vis. When we first started trapping here, cats had to be taken to vets on the mainland, just under three hours away by ferry.

Since May of 2021, we’ve had a vet on the island on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings, and occasionally on Saturdays in summer.

We still take cats to Split sometimes, but it’s nice to have a choice.

We’re grateful for the fact that street cats from anywhere on the island can be sterilized for free, and hope to encourage more people to get involved in doing this.

We’re also grateful for Dr. Mario Gavranović and his team at Vet Vision.

Why sterilize? Because if kittens are born to cats

Why sterilize? Because if kittens are born to cats nobody wants, cats abandoned at the dump or elsewhere, everyone suffers.

Mom gets worn out from having litter after litter, kittens suffer and die, and males fight and mate with any female they can find, perpetuating the cycle of suffering.

Colonies grow out of control, already scarce resources are stretched even thinner, and disease spreads more easily among weakened cats.
