Street Cats of Vis : Helping People Help Cats

Street cats from anywhere on the island of Vis can be spayed and neutered for free. We rely on donations for everything else: exams, medications, fostering and adoption expenses, food, and equipment to help us save lives.

This is a crucial part of our operation: we always need food, and the more donations we get, the more we’re able to help others.

You can make a difference.

There are many abandoned cats who would love a good home. We currently don’t have space to help as many as we’d like, so they remain on the street, at the dump, and elsewhere around the island.

We get cats sterilized, care for several colonies, and help other colony caretakers with a portion of their monthly food needs as well. We monitor the colonies we care for to make sure everyone’s healthy and living their best outdoor life.

But street life isn’t for everyone. Some of these abandoned cats really crave human attention, and would love to be adopted. We wish we could give them all the homes they deserve, but we don’t even have space to foster them.

Sadly, we can often only react when it’s too late, as with Ginnji. He’d been on our list to get out of the dump, but we were never able to justify taking him, a healthy, sterilized dump veteran, when so many others were in desperate need.

Ginnji got shot at the dump, the bones in his front left leg shattered beyond repair. We took him in then, of course, and saw him through amputation, healing, rehabilitation, fostering, and adoption.

This is the happy ending we want for all abandoned cats, without the trauma that Ginnji endured.

Monthly support will help us access space for fostering more cats as they wait for adoption.

It will allow us to improve our storage infrastructure so donations of dry food can be kept away from rats.

It will keep our traps and boxes out of the rain and brutal sun.

It will allow us to foster more cats as they await adoption, and to provide space for the volunteers we desperately need.

We need a baseline of €600 per month. €90 have already been pledged: can you help us reach our goal?

Okac and Kraljica both need dental work, and one of the vets we work with is offering a 20% dental discount for the month of April.

Problems with the teeth and gums cause pain to cats when they try to eat, and can also cause health problems later on if left untreated

Dental work is notoriously expensive. We’ve raised money for Okac, but still need €500 euros for Kraljica so we can take advantage of the April discount. Can you contribute?

It’s not just feeding.

It’s caring for sick and injured cats we’ve taken in: cleaning, administering meds as needed, and going to the vet as needed.

It’s keeping those cats until they get adopted, and providing our adoption network with the resources they need to help us find and vet homes.

It’s fostering cats in our bathrooms and other small personal spaces when the cathouse is full and that’s the only space we have left.

It’s getting a call late at night about a cat hit by a car, but still alive, and running out to try and save that cat.

It’s sitting at the dump for hours, in the dark, trying to catch the most wary ferals for sterilizing.

It’s losing an entire day going to a vet on the mainland because there’s an emergency but our island vet only comes once a week.

It’s trapping and taking cats to the local vet for sterilizing, coming back later to pick them up, holding them for observation, driving back to release each cat where it came from, cleaning all the traps, and starting all over again.

It’s helping people in our local community help cats by providing tools, knowledge, and resources.

It’s keeping our website up to date, creating social media content, designing fundraising items, and cultivating a community of people who care enough to donate and help.

This is all volunteer work.

We do it gladly every day, but we need your help to keep going.
