People abandon cats for various reasons. Some want to rid their neighborhood of the consequences of unchecked breeding when the population gets out of control, some decide they don’t want a female cat around (pregnant or not), and some people cruelly separate kittens from their mother and dump them somewhere to die so as to get rid of what they perceive as a problem.
The real problem is ignorance. If street cats are spayed and neutered, the population will stabilize, and existing cats can continue to live their lives happily on the street, hopefully with humans looking out for their well-being. When cats are dumped, the population problem is just being moved, not solved.
If a cat has been socialized, like many of the cats we find at the dump, then abandoning them is particularly cruel. A socialized cat may not have great survival skills, and will face extra challenges trying to survive with other cats in an unfamiliar environment.
Sterilization is the only humane way to keep the street cat population under control, and to prevent the suffering caused by displacement and abandonment.
