Cats are prolific breeders, so if left unchecked, a cat population will quickly grow. The only humane way to prevent uncontrolled breeding is through TNR, which stands for Trap, Neuter, Return. Read about the vacuum effect here.
We practice TNR on Vis. A vet comes to the island once a week (sometimes twice a week in summer), and any street cat from anywhere on the island can be spayed or neutered for free. An ear notch is cut while the cat is under anaesthesia to let people know that s/he has been sterilized.
If you need help getting cats to the vet for sterilizing, you can contact us at streetcatsofvis@gmail.com or on social media.
